Because the National Electrical Code is a massive combination of individual topics, subject matters, and electrical variations; comprehending and interpreting such information can prove to be quite challenging for even the most experienced users. Having a sound background in such topics as mathematics and electrical theory are certainly needed to begin digesting the wealth of information provided in the code. The NEC terms and terminology alone requires the user to speak another language, “code language” that is. Often enough, attempting to translate rules and instructions in the NEC to perform electrical calculations are quite similar to resolving mathematical word problems that are not so obvious. As a result, interpretation of the code and problem-solving techniques are not mastered easily.
During my many years of teaching the NEC, math, electrical theory and other electrical subjects, I have always placed myself in the position of the student. I know first-hand how frustrating it can be to want to ask questions that you don’t know how to ask. I also know how difficult it is to read information over and over again only to find yourself not getting anywhere.
